How to File Your Income Tax Return on RAMIS (2025/2026)

RAMIS is the Inland Revenue Department's online system, and filing your individual income tax (IIT) return through it has been compulsory since the 2023/2024 Year of Assessment. This guide walks you through it screen by screen, in plain English. Last updated 2026-11-05.

Key facts

  • Deadline: 30 November 2026 for the 2025/2026 Year of Assessment
  • What you need: Your TIN and your e-Services PIN
  • Where: ird.gov.lk, under e-Services, then Access to e-Services
  • Which return: Simplified or Standard, depending on your income

Before you start: what you need

Have these ready before you log in. Most of the time spent filing goes on finding documents, not on the forms. No TIN or PIN yet? The Access to e-Services page has links to obtain a TIN and request a PIN. Request them early, because you cannot file without them.

  • Your TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) and e-Services PIN
  • APIT/T-10 certificates from every employer for the year
  • Bank interest certificates showing AIT/WHT deducted
  • Rent received and your rental agreements
  • Business or freelance income and expense records
  • Receipts for donations and other qualifying payments
  • A list of what you own and owe as at 31 March 2026: property, vehicles, bank balances, shares, loans

Step by step: filing your return on RAMIS

  • Step 1: Open Access to e-Services

Go to ird.gov.lk. Under e-Services, choose Access to e-Services.

  • Step 2: Log in as an individual

Select Individual Taxpayer and tap Proceed to Login. Enter your TIN, your PIN and the CAPTCHA exactly as shown.

  • Step 3: Check that Individual Income Tax is active

Under Return / Schedule Management, select Individual Income Tax (IIT). If IIT is not listed, you are not yet set up for it: submit a request through the Taxpayer Registration tab (Tax type Registration Request). This often catches employees whose tax was only deducted as APIT. If IIT is listed but the year is missing, use the Return issuance tab to issue the return to yourself.

  • Step 4: Choose the Year of Assessment

    Select 2025/2026 and tap Proceed.

  • Step 5: Tick your income sources

Select every type of income you had during the year and click Next. RAMIS uses your answers to send you to either the Simplified Return or the Standard Return.

  • Step 6: Complete your return

In the Simplified Return, check the pre-filled employment and interest figures and correct them if needed. In the Standard Return, enter your income in Schedules 1 to 4, reliefs and qualifying payments in Schedule 5, withholding tax in Schedules 6 and 7, and tax credits such as APIT in Schedule 9. RAMIS calculates the tax in Schedule 8.

  • Step 7: Fill in the Statement of Assets and Liabilities

Declare what you owned and owed, in or outside Sri Lanka, as at 31 March 2026. These values are not used to calculate your tax, but the statement is part of the return.

  • Step 8: Complete the declaration

Part A is for details of anyone who prepared the return for a fee, such as a tax consultant. Part B is your own declaration.

  • Step 9: Check the confirmation page and save a copy

Every figure appears on the confirmation page. Use Amend to go back and fix anything. Print it or save it as a PDF before you submit: once submitted, you cannot view, print or edit the return.

  • Step 10: Upload documents and submit

Use Upload Supporting Documents to attach your certificates now, choosing the right document type, or submit the return and upload them later. Then press Submit.

  • Step 11: Pay any balance by the deadline

If the return shows a balance tax payable after your credits, pay it by 30 November 2026. Payment details are available through Access to e-Services on the IRD website.

Simplified or Standard return: which one is yours?

The Simplified Return is shorter and partly pre-filled. According to the IRD guide you can use it if your income is only from: If you have any other income, such as rent, business, freelance or foreign income, or you claim qualifying payments or reliefs beyond the personal relief, you must file the Standard Return. Pre-filled figures in the Simplified Return still need checking: the return is your own declaration.

  • Primary employment
  • Secondary employment
  • Residential solar panel installations
  • Interest from a licensed bank or finance company, where AIT has been deducted
  • Two or more of the above
  • Or you are filing a nil return

The Standard Return schedules at a glance

Each schedule feeds the main return automatically. You fill in the schedules; RAMIS does the totals.

  • Schedule 1: Employment income, including exempt or excluded amounts
  • Schedule 2: Business income
  • Schedule 3: Investment income: interest, dividends, rent (with the 25% rent relief) and capital gains
  • Schedule 4: Other income
  • Schedule 5: Qualifying payments such as approved donations, and reliefs
  • Schedules 6 and 7: Payments where withholding tax was or should have been deducted
  • Schedule 8: Tax calculation (done by the system)
  • Schedule 9: Tax credits: APIT, AIT/WHT, instalments paid and foreign tax credit
  • Schedule 10: Business losses brought forward, if any

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving it to the last week, when the system is busiest and a missing PIN can cost days
  • Not activating Individual Income Tax before the deadline if your tax was only deducted as APIT
  • Forgetting to claim APIT from a second employer, or AIT deducted on bank interest
  • Missing the 25% relief on rental income
  • Submitting without saving a copy of the confirmation page
  • Accepting pre-filled figures in the Simplified Return without checking them

RAMIS questions, answered

  • Is it compulsory to file my income tax return on RAMIS?

Yes. Under the Inland Revenue Act, individuals must file their income tax return electronically from the 2023/2024 Year of Assessment onwards, and RAMIS is the system used.

  • What is the deadline to file for 2025/2026?

The IRD has said that returns for the 2025/2026 Year of Assessment must be filed electronically on or before 30 November 2026.

  • How do I get my RAMIS PIN?

Go to ird.gov.lk and open Access to e-Services. It has links to obtain a TIN and to request a PIN. You need both your TIN and PIN to log in and file.

  • Why can't I see Individual Income Tax when I log in?

It means you are not yet set up for Individual Income Tax for that year. Submit a Tax type Registration Request through the Taxpayer Registration tab. If IIT is listed but the year is not, use the Return issuance tab.

  • Can I edit my return after submitting it?

Not on RAMIS: once submitted, you cannot view, print or edit the return. That is why you should check the confirmation page carefully and save a copy before you press Submit.

  • Can someone file my RAMIS return for me?

Yes. A tax consultant can prepare and file your return, and their details go in Part A of the declaration. EzBusiness tax consultants do this for individuals across Sri Lanka.

  • My employer already deducted APIT. Do I still need to file?

Often yes, especially if you had more than one employer, other income, or reliefs to claim. APIT is an advance payment, and the return is where it is credited against your final tax. If you are not sure, estimate your tax with our free calculator or ask us.

Rather not do it yourself?

An EzBusiness tax consultant can prepare your return, claim every credit and relief, and file it on RAMIS for you. Fixed fees, and nothing is filed until you approve it.
